Super 8 is Super Impressive

If you follow me on GetGlue, you know that I went to see Super 8 this weekend and before it started my comment was, "Impress me, J.J.". Well J.J. Abrams did just that - Super 8 is BRILLIANT! Though I was expecting a terrifying thriller, it was more than that. Super 8 was a touching and poignant coming of age tale with a solid message I believe everyone can get behind: bad things happen, but, you can still be live and find happiness. I don't want to give much away about the plot, but, it's very much The Goonies for a new generation. No it's not a treasure hunt and it does have aliens, but, the essence of The Goonies is present in the film, only J.J. does it better. Abrams wrote and directed Super 8, as well as, produced the project with movie legend Steven Spielberg. More than anything this film has the kind of heart present in Spielberg's triumph E.T. with compelling leads in Elle Fanning (sister of Twilight cast member Dakota Fanning) and newcomer Joel Courtney. Though Super 8 won the box office race this weekend earning approximately 38 million, many media outlets are upset that the film didn't earn more because the total box office gross was down 3% from last week and 7% compared to the same week last year. However, I genuinely feel that Super 8 is the type of film that will end up grossing a great deal in the long run and will entertain viewers for generations to come, eventually becoming a part of part of our culture just like E.T. or The Goonies. Nothing went wrong here, the economy is bad everyone can't afford to hit the movies every weekend. Bottom Line: When you have an opportunity see Super 8 - DO IT - I promise you won't regret it.
