What's on Tonight
There's pretty much something for everyone tonight on TV. Along with Sunday's usual crop of programming, tonight offers a ton of new choices.
The 38th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards
If you have any love or respect for daytime television then you need to be watching tonight because odds are that this will be the last televised Daytime Emmys. When Soaps ruled the world, this was an award show that rivaled the Oscars, but, as the medium has declined so has the viewership for this telecast, despite the inclusion of talk, lifestyle and game shows. CBS is bringing in several big stars such as Criminal Minds lead hottie and once Y&R superstar Shemar Moore to say goodbye to the departing soaps, Oprah's talk show, as well as, Regis and Today's Meredith Vieira. Wayne Brady will be hosting the event, which is set in Vegas for the second year in order to cut down on costs. On a side note, everyone should care about daytime TV and soaps in particular because this a a multi-generational phenomenon that has helped people connect and interact with one another. I'm sad to see what our culture will be like without this programming.
2011 Miss USA Pageant

Also returning tonight, is Lifetime's hit Drop Dead Diva which follows a female model that comes back to life only to find herself in the body of a larger sized attorney. I know this is a fan favorite, however, it's not one of my favs so that's all I really have to say on the show. Finally, TV Land offers the presentation of AFI Lifetime Achievement Award to Morgan Freeman. The film legend will be honored by a ton of celebs like Helen Mirren and Samuel L. Jackson.
NBC also offers viewers a Vegas spectacular with the 2011 Miss USA Pageant. Hosted by Bravo's Andy Cohen and E! Entertainment's Giuliana Rancic (certainly not my favorite hosting pair as neither resonates as terribly genuine to me) the show will crown the new Miss USA. Hopefully this year won't provide any scandals as I believe the US public is incredibly bored and even, dare I say, embarrassed by what's gone on in previous years. By the way, tonight's presentation will be live so any mishaps will be incredibly visible.
Can't take another alien show? Well then this is probably NOT for you. This new Sci-Fi show comes from someone who knows quite a bit about aliens, entertainment powerhouse Steven Spielberg. All the reviews seem to echo the same message: Yes, it's full of cliches and predictability, but, there's also something heartfelt and new here. So apparently, it is enjoyable. Look, sometimes a mini-series doesn't have to be life changing; sometimes TV just needs to be fun. My impression - if you liked Jericho or Independence Day then you'll be content to have Falling Skies be your viewing option for the night. Tonight's two hour program is just the start of the 8 part series, so keep in mind that you'll likely be committing to the whole shebang.
The new season of Masterpiece Mystery begins this evening with Agatha Christie's lovable Belgian detective working to solve the mystery of why people keep turning up dead at a series of dinner parties. I adore Hercule Poirot, as well as, Masterpiece Mystery host Alan Cumming, so I can guarantee that I'll be DVRing the PBS offering this evening. This summer there will be two more new Poirots, a new Miss Marple, three Zen movies (a new mystery series starring British talent Rufus Sewell ) and a new set of Inspector Lewis films. Though I can't imagine any of these be quite as good as last year's breakout hit Sherlock, I very much believe these mysteries won't disappoint. On a final note, don't fret Sherlock fans - it's coming back. Production on season two has already started and is under a tight deadline with both stars committed to work on The Hobbit.

Smart Move: Glee Hires New Writers & EPs
If you're a Gleek, borderline Gleek or have even spoken to very many people about television in the past two years, you've probably heard praises for Glee followed by laments about how far the show has fallen. Let me start out by saying, I feel fairly comfortable calling myself a Gleek. I own 68 songs sung by the cast of Glee, that equates to 3.8 hours of Glee filled entertainment, add in my season one DVD set and I HAVE to be comfortable with my Gleek status. Simply put: I love the show.
Additionally, as a someone who spends a vast amount of time studying television and the practice of making television, I commend the Glee creative team of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan for their work. The sheer volume of work alone that these three men have completed on a weekly basis is, not just unheard of in modern television, but, awe-inspiring. There are a very few people on the face of the planet who could achieve what these guys have and then to sell it to the masses so successfully - forget about it. Where the problem lies is in maintaining the level of quality and success set by the Glee creative team. Once you've set the bar - you have to continue jumping over it.
When you're doing as much work as Murphy, Falchuk and Brennan, something has to give. It's just a fact. Thus, even though the musical series has had numerous triumphs there have also been some serious issues. In the first season, the biggest problem was the static nature of the series. What I mean by that is that due to the amount of planning needed, the storyline and character's relationships were locked in place. For example, during the premiere season, Rachel and Finn were set up as the power couple, only to find out when the shows began airing, that Rachel and Puck had serious chemistry and fan backing. However, due to scheduling there was no way to change the flow, Finchel was locked. Season two saw the same problem plus many new challenges. In Glee's sophomore season, despite several triumphs, including the casting of Chord Overstreet, Darren Criss and Dot Jones, many fans, including myself, found quite a few characters doing things that felt, well... out of character. What most didn't understand is that, though we fans spend a minimum of an hour a week with the characters once a week for 22 weeks, that's nothing compared to what the Glee creative teams spends with them. Then, when you factor in all that these gentlemen do for the series, even the lovable Will Schuester can start to grate on the nerves and one starts to feel that out of character behavior is essential to shake things up. I believe stating that these changes weren't well received is a bit of a understatement. The show did do a bit of course correction and the season ended on a decent note, yet, viewers (even hardcore Gleeks) were left with a general taste of dissatisfaction for season two which, unfortunately, the rating reflected.
Now, comes news that, for the first time, Glee will have a full writing staff and an expanded number of executive producers. YAY!!!!! Don't freak out; that does NOT mean the original three Glee creators won't be involved in the show's third season, it just means they'll get to wear less hats. Trust me, TV watchers, you want them to get some space from the McKinley High crew because the result is going to be better. Plus, Glee/Fox have hired some brilliant, brilliant, brilliant people.
First up, Allison Adler. If you're aren't familiar with the genius that is Ali Adler then 1) I feel sorry for you and 2) she's AWESOME. Perhaps best known for her work on Chuck, Adler is a fan favorite. She writes tight, witty shows with heart, just like her newly hired colleague and Buffy alum, Marti Noxon. These women are veterans of the entertainment industry and each has served as an inspiration for many, including me. For any TV show to be successful, but, for Glee specifically, it must maintain a high level of quality and fan base, while, at the same time, finding mass appeal. That's a tough order and clearly one with which Glee has been struggling. Still, if anyone can ace that test, it's Adler and Noxon - they have loads of experience doing just that. Furthermore, both of these women know how important it is to please and win fans. That means, chances are, if fans hate or love an aspect of the show these ladies are going to address it head on and quickly, likely leading to a better show. I expect Sue Sylvester quips to be even funnier, the musical incorporations to be more fluid and the life changing character decisions to cause more tears.
Also joining the Glee creative force is Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, whose big claim to fame is the re-write of the potentially doomed Spiderman Broadway show, along with Michael Hitchcock, Matthew Hodgson and Ross Maxwell. If anyone is wondering about that whole 'too many cooks in the kitchen' thing, in this case it's not an issue because there's more than enough work to go around.
Bottom Line: Season 3 of Glee won't stink!
Brand New HP Trailer!
It's almost time to say goodbye to the Harry Potter series; that is unless J.K. Rollings' big announcement is a continuation of the series, personally, I believe, if she continues it'll be a prequel exploring Voldemort's first rise to power. Nevertheless, the HP trailer looks gorgeous. Check it out here.

I Love The Muppets!!!! If I’m being honest, The Muppet Movie is probably my very favorite film. Usually I say Charade is my favorite and though I do love that mystery classic, if I had only one film to watch for all eternity I’d most likely choose The Muppet Movie or The Mummy, but, I digress. The point is The Muppets are very important to me, as is this new Muppet film, which is aptly titled The Muppets. But, I’m not the least bit concerned because the trailers that have been released are perfect! Adding to my ease regarding the project is the fact my fellow Muppets lover and How I Met Your Mother star Jason Segal is not only lead in the film, but, he wrote and is producing the project. I heard him interviewed early on in the process and his high level of respect and adoration for The Muppets is very apparent. James Bobin from Flight of The Conchords is helming the project and there’s a TON of majorly creative and big name stars working on the film which boils down this should be excellent. I feel fairly confident that The Muppets is going to be great especially after viewing the hilarious Green Lantern trailer - check it out and let me know what y’all think.

Today is The Day - PLL Returns with Chloe King
Today is Flag Day, which is pretty awesome because the Pretty Little Liars flag is flying high due to the show's return tonight. ROCK ON! I can't recall the last time I was this excited about a show's return, chances are it was probably Alias. Regardless, I (and my best friend, Lindsey) have literally been counting down the days till the Liars are back with new episodes. If you're like my dad and have no clue what Pretty Little Liars is, well then you should be watching the season 1 marathon on ABC Family right now or picking up the premiere season DVDs or if you just don't have the time to catch up before season 2 starts up Wetpaint has an incredibly succinct recap. It doesn't have all the juicy info, but, it has enough for you to be ready to watch tonight. Basically there's four gorgeous high school girls being blackmailed; there's lots of drama and intrigue - think Dawson's Creek meets a film noir. Plus, the show has tremendously HOTT guys and the best title sequence I've ever seen. *Spoiler Alert* Additionally, the Toby/Spencer romance is sooooo lovely and sweet; Troian Bellasario and Keegan Allen have mad chemistry, they alone are worth watching the series. Oh and here's a tidbit courtesy of the New York Post Allison's brother has been recast with delicious model Drew Van Acker.
Both Pretty Little Liars and The Nine Lives of Chloe King start tonight on ABC Family. I'll be watching; what about you?
